Welcome back!
New Teacher Appointed
The Governors are very pleased to announce that a new colleague has been appointed. Miss Fiona O’Reilly will take up her appointment from September. Miss O’Reilly obtained a BA in Maths and Sociology at Maynooth University (Ireland); achieved her PGCE at Manchester University and a further qualification at the Marino Institute. Miss O’Reilly has been teaching for four years.
The school received a considerable number of very good applications and was particularly fortunate that all called to interview were also Catholic.
Coincidentally during the time Miss O’Reilly was studying at Maynooth, the Chaplain was my cousin, Fr Denis Ross.
Olympic Torch
The Olympic torch will make its way through Rugby on July 2nd. The torch first approaches Rugby early in the morning therefore it is likely that it could interfere with some pupils journeys into school depending on where they have to come from. You can find a copy of the route map at the web address below.
www.rugby.gov.uk/downloads/Olympic_Torch_Route.jpg
The nearest the route goes to Hillmorton is when it comes along Clifton Road, down Whitehall Road and west up Hillmorton Road (08.45). However road closures to make way for the torch may affect any staff or pupils who have to travel in this way.
You may bring your child into school later that morning if you would like them to see the torch passing by. Please let Mrs Bale know in advance.
Hillmorton Jubillee Summer Fete
I have been a member of the committee since it was formed twelve years ago. Over that period the Association has raised thousands of pounds for a variety of charities local and national including the Air Ambulance and Help for Heroes. Before being disbanded this summer we are arranging one final event - a Summer Fayre on the Village Green. This will form part of the Jubilee celebrations. The Fayre will take place on Bank Holiday Tuesday, June 5th. The school choir have been invited to sing at the event. Being in the middle of half term some children may be away. Therefore I would be grateful if you could let Mrs Clensy know whether your child, if in the choir, would be available to sing?
Summer weather
The guidance below was adopted a few years ago.
Children must not bring into school any sun screen lotion (unless prescribed by a doctor) as this can (and has) burst over lunches and books. Any sun protection cream should be applied liberally before the children leave home. In accordance with Warwickshire guidance (2004) staff are not permitted to apply any lotion.
Alternatively parents may apply sun protection to their child over the lunch break. Sun hats should be worn and carry the child’s name. A long-sleeved shirt might also be considered.
We encourage children to drink even more water when hot and seek out the shade whenever possible. If exceptionally hot we may shorten outside playtimes or change the times of outside physical education activities to reduce exposure to the sun.
Year 6 SATs Week: May 14th – 17th
Y6 children will be undertaking SATs from Monday May 14th. Please make every effort to bring your child into school as any absence, whatever the reason, counts against the school’s published results. Quite simply, were a third of the class struck down by illness, it would result in EMS being presented officially as one of the worst schools in the country for SATs results! It is for reasons like this that so many Head Teachers oppose SATs – not the tests themselves.
If you anticipate any delays arriving at school please email me at head@englishmartyrs.net throughout the weekend, or phone the school each weekday morning: (01788) 543423, as early as possible. Were a child ill they could be collected from school straight after the test. In exceptional cases the tests could be undertaken at home supervised by a colleague or myself.
Did you know that Finland is thought to have one of the best education systems in the world? Curiously they
§ Don’t sit external exams until the end of their schooling
§ Start school at a later age than the UK
§ Have no league tables so no high stakes accountability § No inspection regime, it was abolished 30 years ago |
Reminder
Children must not arrive in school before 8.30am. Ideally they should arrive between 8.40am and 8.55am. Remember, the Breakfast Club, held daily in the Parish Hall from 8am, is provided for parents who must leave their children earlier. Please contact Denise Hall on 0787 621 1946.
Cycle Storage
Initially this facility will be offered to children in Years 4, 5 and 6. Please ask for an application form.
School Ties
Traditional and clip-on are now in stock. Please see Mrs Bale in the office.
